                                                CENTENARY

A poem by Peggy Day Choir member & retired organist at St. Peter-le-Poer

A century of celebrations
Sunday by Sunday, an austerity Of Advents and a numinosity
Of numberless Noels.
A litany of Lents, a holiness
Of high Hosannas and a harrowing
Of Holy weeks, a grieving of Good Fridays,
An ecstasy of Easters.

And from the plethora of Pentecosts,
Triumph of Trinities and plenitude Of Petertides a family emerged,
Spanning the generations.
Yesterday’s baptised little ones becoming
Today’s young parents and tomorrow’s elders.
A history of welcomes and farewells,
Of faith held fast through years of war and peace,
Of change and chance.

Dear Lord, we thank you for a hundred years,
A hundred thousand blessings.
Grant us grace To stand before You,
poised to meet the challenge Of the next century.
